Gretchen Tolentino Taruc, popularly known as Chen Taruc, is a Kapampangan visual artist from Candaba, Pampanga, Philippines. A self-taught artist, her passion for art began at an early age and was nurtured through years of dedication, self-discovery, and continuous artistic exploration. Throughout her academic years, she consistently represented her school in various art competitions and has since participated in both local and international art exhibitions.

Chen's artistic journey encompasses a diverse range of creative disciplines, including painting, charcoal portraiture, mural art, styro backdrops, and customized name cut-outs. Her artworks reflect her personal growth, resilience, and deep appreciation for culture, family, faith, and the beauty of everyday life.

INSPIRATION & THEMES

A defining theme in her work is the celebration of womanhood, motherhood, and human strength. Inspired by her own life experiences, particularly the profound loss of her son, Chen transforms emotions into powerful visual narratives. Her renowned Mother and Child Series explores maternal love, sacrifice, hope, and unconditional devotion.

Another significant body of work, the Buhay Probinsya Series, captures the richness of Filipino culture, traditions, and rural life. Through vibrant compositions and symbolic imagery, she portrays the enduring spirit, resilience, and warmth of the Filipino people.

STYLE & APPROACH

Chen's artistic style combines elements of Pointillism, Cubism, and Vector Art, creating visually dynamic and distinctive compositions. Her use of vibrant colors symbolizes hope, joy, faith, and the miracles found in everyday life. A recurring symbol in many of her paintings is the sun, representing optimism and her personal philosophy of "Hope for Tomorrow."
